The number at the router is not the number on your phone
At a Murtho property the router read 400 Mbps. The brewery, over a wireless link, read 250. The house read 65 and the cottage 30. One dish, one service, four very different answers.
That gap is Wi-Fi, not satellite. A single router in a corner of a stone farmhouse cannot cover a shed 80 m away, and no amount of speed at the dish fixes it. If the complaint is “it is slow in the back room”, the job is access points and a link out to the shed, which is on the cost page as whole-property Wi-Fi.
What that speed is actually enough for
- 4K streaming needs about 15 Mbps a screen. Our slowest recorded install carries four or five at once
- Teams and Zoom need a few Mbps and low latency. Starlink runs 25 to 60 ms to Australian servers, so calls behave like a fixed line
- Farm cameras and remote sites work, and we run Nx and Hikvision systems over Starlink daily
- Online gaming is playable, which was never true on the old satellite services
- Big uploads are the weak spot. Uploads sit far below downloads, so a full-resolution drone card takes a while
Speed questions
How fast is Starlink in the Riverland?
On our own installs, 100 to 402 Mbps down, measured at the router on the day we handed the job over. The table above is every figure we wrote in the job notes, with the town and the month, so you can see the spread rather than one number picked out of it.
Is that fast enough for Netflix?
Yes, several times over. Netflix asks for 15 Mbps for 4K on one screen. Even our slowest recorded install runs four or five 4K streams at once. Speed is rarely the thing that breaks streaming out here; the Wi-Fi between the router and the TV usually is.
What about video calls and working from home?
Fine. Latency on Starlink sits around 25 to 60 ms to Australian servers, which is close to a fixed line and nothing like the old satellite services. Teams and Zoom behave normally. Upload is the number that matters for calls, and it sits well above what a call needs.
Why is my phone slower than the speed test you did?
Because we test at the router and you use the house. At a Murtho job the router read 400 Mbps, the brewery 250, the house 65 and the cottage 30, all off the same dish. Thick walls, distance and a cheap access point cost more speed than the satellite ever does.
Do speeds drop at night?
They move around through the day as more people share the same cell overhead, and evenings are the busiest. It is still comfortably enough for streaming; it is why we quote a range and not a single number.
Can you test it before I commit?
We can check your address for obstructions and tell you what your neighbours are getting, but the real number only exists once a dish is on your roof. Starlink's own 30-day return policy is the honest safety net.
